Part 1 forms: signing up for an evening class
You can predict the kind of answer each gap needs and catch names, numbers and dates the first time you hear them.
A man is phoning a college to join an evening class, and you have the college's form to fill in.
That is Listening Part 1: two people in an everyday situation, and answers that are mostly names, numbers and dates. You hear each answer once.
So the work happens before the speaker gets there: you need to know what each gap is waiting for.
Warm-up
What does the gap need?
Before any recording plays, look at one line of a form.
Read thisDay of class: ______
What kind of answer fits this gap?
How it works
Complete the form below. Write ONE WORD AND/OR A NUMBER for each answer.
BRIDGEFORD COLLEGE: EVENING COURSES
Course: Introduction to 1
Name: Daniel 2
Phone: 3
Start date: 4 October
Day: 5, 7 to 9 pm
Room: 6, Arts Building
Fee: £7 (printing extra)
Part 1 forms follow the conversation from top to bottom.
The method
- 1Use the reading time
Before each part you get time to read its questions. Go down the form gap by gap and ask what kind of word belongs there: a name, a date, an amount, a thing.
- 2Follow the form in order
The answers come in the same order as the form. Keep your eyes on the next gap. If you miss one, go straight to the one after it.
- 3Catch spellings and numbers
Names are usually spelled out letter by letter, and phone numbers are read in small groups. Write what you hear, as you hear it.
- 4Wait for the change of mind
Part 1 speakers often correct themselves or each other. The answer is the one they finish with.
- 5Check the word limit
ONE WORD AND/OR A NUMBER allows one word, one number, or one of each. An answer over the limit is marked wrong, even when the words are right.

Listen to the end of a turn: the first date or number is often changed.
Check each answer against the word limit, and write spelled names letter for letter.
