Part 2 matching: a town festival programme
You can match what you hear to a box of options, and hold on until the speaker settles on the final one.
Part 2 of Listening is one person talking about something in daily life: a tour, a local service, an event. Here it's a festival organiser going through a week of events.
You match each event to its venue, using a box of lettered places. The box has more places than you need. The talk mentions wrong places too, so the skill is waiting for the one the speaker settles on.
Warm-up
Old place or new place?
Read one sentence from a talk about a village fair, then answer the question.
Read thisThe quiz used to be in the café upstairs, but it's grown too big for that, so this year we're using the main hall.
Where will the quiz be this year?
How it works
Where will each event take place? Choose FIVE answers from the box and write the correct letter, A-G, next to Questions 11-15.
- ACommunity Centre
- BLibrary
- CMarket Square
- DRiverside Park
- ETown Hall
- FHarbour Wall
- GOld Fire Station
- 11Lantern-making workshop11
- 12Storytelling evening12
- 13Folk dance display13
- 14Photography exhibition14
- 15Closing concert15
Part 2 begins at question 11. The events come in the order you hear them. The places in the box are in no particular order.
How to follow the talk
- 1Read the box first
Each part opens with some time to look at its questions. Say each place in the box to yourself, so you know it the moment you hear it.
- 2Follow the numbered events
The events are in the order of the talk. When the speaker names the next event, its answer is on the way.
- 3Expect more than one place
For one event, the speaker may mention two or three places: where it was last year, where it nearly went, where you buy tickets.
- 4Wait for the final arrangement
The answer is where the event will actually happen. Words like so, this year and moving to often come just before it.
- 5Answer every question
The answer is a letter from A to G. A blank scores nothing, so if you miss one, make your best guess and go on to the next event.
Two kinds of sentence
It used to be in... / We thought about..., but it's booked. / You can buy tickets at... / They wanted..., but...
So this year it's moving to... / So it'll be in... / It's going to be at... / They're going on show in...
Question 11: the lantern-making workshop
Answer question 11 on your own first, then compare with my working below. Listen to the clip once.
Clip 1: the lantern workshop

In the exam you hear this once. Here you may play it again after you have tried.
Where will the lantern-making workshop take place?
Watch me do one
Before the talk starts, I read the box and say the seven places to myself. Then I read the five events.
Question 11 is the lantern-making workshop. The speaker names it, so I know the answer is close.
The library comes first: For the last few years we've held it in the library. That's where it used to be.
Then the town hall: We thought about the town hall, but it's booked most of that week. That's a place it won't be.
So this year the workshop's moving to the community centre. So, this year and moving to all point to the new place. I write A.
Both wrong places were said clearly, and both came first. They catch anyone who writes down the first place they hear.

Words to keep
Sell every ticket, so none are left. The storytelling evening always sells out.
Available to buy. Tickets are on sale at the library.
Already reserved by someone else. The town hall is booked most of that week.
A table or small stand where things are sold, often outdoors. On market day the square is full of stalls.
Displayed for people to look at. The photos are on show in the library's entrance hall.
Protection from wind or rain. The spot by the river has a bit of shelter from the wind.
Before you go
Read the box before the part starts, and say each option to yourself.
Follow the numbered events. They come in the order of the talk.
Expect two or three places for one event. The answer is the final arrangement, often after so or this year.
Give a letter for every question, even when you have to guess.
