Part 1 tables: ordering food for a club dinner
You can read a table's rows and columns before the recording starts, keep your place as it plays, and write only what each cell is missing.
Imran is organising the end-of-season dinner for his badminton club, and he has phoned a caterer to order the food.
Listening Part 1 can give you a table to complete while two people talk. It looks busier than a form, but the printed cells help you. They tell you which dish the speakers have reached and what kind of answer each gap needs.
Warm-up
One word, with a hyphen
The instructions say ONE WORD AND/OR A NUMBER. Imagine you hear the sentence below.
Read thisOne guest can't have milk, cheese or butter, so her meal needs to be dairy-free.
What do you write in the gap? Meal must be ______
How it works
Complete the table below. Write ONE WORD AND/OR A NUMBER for each answer.
| Food | Number | Notes | Price |
|---|---|---|---|
| Chicken with 1 | 2 portions | mild | $17 each |
| Vegetable 3 | 7 portions | one must be 4 | $15 each |
| Apple cake | 4 whole cakes | served with 5 | $6 per cake |
The question numbers follow the order of the conversation. In this table they run across each row, then down to the next.
What the table tells you before anyone speaks
The parts, in order
The kind of answer. Under Number you need a number. Under Price you need an amount, and the $ is already printed.
Where you are in the conversation. When you hear apple cake, you are on the last row.
Clues to the answer. A note such as mild or per cake narrows down what you are waiting to hear.
The order of the answers. Follow them across the row, so you always know which gap comes next.
While you listen
- 1Move with the rows
The speakers name a dish before they give its details. Move your eyes to that row as soon as you hear it.
- 2Wait for the decision
A caterer offers choices, and the caller turns some of them down. Write the one they agree on.
- 3Write only what the cell is missing
If the table prints portions or $, write the number alone. If it prints Vegetable, write only the word that follows it.
- 4Check the limit
ONE WORD AND/OR A NUMBER allows cake, 40 or 40 cakes, and nothing longer. A hyphenated word such as dairy-free counts as one.

Watch me do one
Question 1 is in the first row, under Food: Chicken with ______. So I'm waiting for a word that finishes the name of a dish.
Before the clip starts, I read across the row. Mild is printed under Notes, which is already a clue.
Nina offers two versions, with chilli or with lemon. Both would fit the gap, so I don't write anything yet.
Imran says the chilli one might be too hot for the juniors. That matches mild.
Then he decides: we'll go for the lemon, please. I write lemon, one word, inside the limit.
The printed word in the same row pointed to the answer before he gave it, which is why I read across each row first.

Words to keep
A person or business that makes food for events. The club booked a caterer for its end-of-season dinner.
The biggest dish of a meal, served after any starter. Most guests chose chicken for the main course.
Not strong or hot in taste. The juniors asked for a mild curry.
Containing no gluten, a protein found in wheat and some other grains. Rice and potatoes are naturally gluten-free.
Choose it. We'll go for the lemon chicken.
Be enough food for that many people. One apple cake serves eight.
Before you go
Read the column headings before the recording. They show the kind of answer you need: a word, a number or a price.
Use the row labels and printed cells to keep your place, and follow the question numbers across each row.
When you hear two options or two prices, write the one the speakers settle on.
Write only what the cell is missing, and count a hyphenated word as one.
Next: In the speaking lesson that follows, you answer Part 1 and Part 3 questions about food with words that are exact and natural.
